Dubrovnik, the historic Ragusa Republic

View from the walls

View from Tvrđava Bokar, along the western city wall towards Tvrđava Minčeta, the 14th-century round fortress at the highest point of the old town; at right, the bell tower of the Franciscan church. In the background is the Imperial Fortress, at the top of the mountain Srđ, just above the city of Dubrovnik. It was built in 1806 by the French General Marshal Marmont and called the Imperial, in honour of emperor Napoleon, who had included the Adriatic coast in the French “Illyrian Provinces”.
