Ottoman Empire, 1570
In 1570 Ottoman forces invaded Cyprus and brought it under its control, with great violence and massacres of its Greek and Armenian Christian inhabitants. Turkish soldiers stayed, and Turkish peasants and artisans were brought in from Anatolia: the ancestors of the Turkish Cypriot population. Ottoman rule lasted for over four centuries. Its flag, displaying a white crescent moon and star, was initially green but was changed to red in 1793. The star had eight points but this changed to five-points in 1844. The crescent represents progress, and the five-pointed star stands for light and knowledge; it is now often considered as a symbol of Islam. It has remained the flag of modern Turkey.
