Paphos, the south-west of Cyprus

Floor decorations, Chrysopolitissa

The mosaic floor with a figural decoration of the nave of the Chrysopolitissa basilica, probably dated to the end of the 4th century CE and part of the Holy Bema floor decoration of the seven-aisled basilica. The scenes, of a symbolic character, are directly associated with the part of the church they decorated: a deer drinking water from a spring on a rocky ground with flowers with a verse from Psalm 41 and a large crater with an inscription of a verse from the Proverbs (‘Wisdom has mixed wine in the crater’).
