Paphos, the south-west of Cyprus
St. Paul’s Pillar, just north of the atrium of the early Christian basilica of Chrysopolitissa, is where, according to tradition, the people of Paphos tied St. Paul and whipped him 39 times. Medieval travellers, however, make no mention of a pillar, only of an underground prison of the apostle. According to the Book of Acts, Barnabas, Paul and Mark visited Paphos in 45 CE. They preached Christianity and the Roman governor Sergius Paulus was a convert to this new religion, starting the Christianisation of Cyprus.
