Old Timers Mine and Museum, Coober Pedy, South Australia

The Old Timers Mine is an Accredited Tourism Business and is Coober Pedy’s Premier tourist attraction, family friendly and affordable and is the only place in the world where you can see three large good quality opal seams and opalised sea shells in the roof.

The Mine was first mined in 1916 with a pick and shovel and scooped into a cowhide bucket.

A visit to the mine is your opportunity to learn, and to see, how the miners of yesteryear worked and lived in candlelight conditions to find a trace of opal, which would hopefully lead them to wealthy deposits. (Still exposed in the wall for you to view today).

You can experience the life of an opal miner over 90 years ago, safely look up and down the shafts they used to gain access to the underground mine.

Walk through a 1918 underground home and see our more modern dugout home.

Coober Pedy produces over 85 percent of the worlds finest opal. This is your chance to see it in its natural state and purchase your own piece of opal jewellery, or souvenirs from our underground opal shop.

This unique opal mine depicts the history of opal mining with all the mystery of searching for opal underground, with the safety of a walk-in, ground level mine.

This attraction now incorporates two underground homes, walk through mine, two sandstone sculptures (camel and miner), many other displays in our Museum on Coober Pedy.
Browse and compare opal jewellery and souvenirs prices of the opal jewellery that has been mined, cut, polished and set locally. Watch our Opal Mining Blower and Tunneling machine at work, opal cutting demonstrations.
