Daly River - Victoria River area, Northern Territory

This is real Nature Territory, situated west of the Stuart highway between Katherine and Darwin, and well worth taking a detour off the main road for. The Daly River winds its way to Anson Bay, passing Nauiyu Nambiyu, formerly the Catholic mission of Daly River, a small Aboriginal community. Further south west, in Daly River Aboriginal Land, are the communities of Peppimenarti, Palumpa and Wadeye: formerly Port Keats, Wadeye is the largest, situated near the coast.

Near the old gold mining town of Pine Creek is Douglas Hot Springs and 15 km further on, along a 4WD track, Butterfly Gorge National Park; a beautiful spot with, indeed, butterflies. Not far from there, along the road to Jindare from Pine Creek, is Umbrawarra Gorge, again a great spot for a picnic, walking and swimming.

Further south, 215 km along the Victoria Highway leading south west from Katherine, the Victoria River is crossed at Gregory National Park with great views; a roadhouse is situated here. The Buntine Highway branches off at Willeroo station, 122 km from Katherine and passes Top Springs Roadhouse, 163 km further south, where is crosses the Buchanan Highway. Huge Road Trains can be seen on these roads, transporting cattle and other goods as well; Victoria River Downs is Australia largest cattle station.

Just before the Victoria Highway crosses into Western Australia, 460 km from Katherine, is Keep River National Park with a beautiful lagoon and interesting walks through a rocky landscape with caves; this used to be an important ceremonial site as can be seen from the many Aboriginal rock paintings here in what is now known as the Nganalam Art Site.
