Tennant Region

Tennant Creek region in the Northern Territory

Tennant Creek, about 500 km north of Alice Springs along the Stuart Highway, is a small mining town and offers tours in its mines. There are hotels and a caravan park and it is a good base to explore the natural wonders of the area. Nearby Devils Pebbles is a short drive from the town, a weird collection of boulders. But the greatest sight is Devils Marbles, south of "Tennant", clearly visible from the Highway. A site of significance to the Aboriginal people, there are precariously balanced boulders, huge rocks that seem cut with a knife, the action of heat erosion: there can be great differences in temperature during day and night.

The Stuart Highway follows the old Telegraph Line and the little telegraph station is still standing at Barrow Creek, further south. North of Tennant Creek is Three Ways, where the long road to Queensland goes east, and the Stuart Highway continues north, via small towns like Elliott and Newcastle Waters towards Katherine, almost 800 km from Tennant Creek.
