Torres Strait Islands

Warraber or Sue Island, Torres Strait Islands

Located in the Central Islands Groups of the Torres Strait, Sue Island, traditionally known as Warraber, lies 72 km north-east of Thursday Island. The Sue Islanders have close kinship ties with Coconut (Poruma), Yam (Iama) and Yorke (Masig) Islands. Warraber is a tiny coral island bounded by an extensive fringe reef. The traditional language spoken is Kalaw Lagaw Ya in addition to Creole and English. The island is accessible by boat, plane and a regular barge service which visits the island with cargo and fresh commodities. Local government services are provided by the Warraber Island Community Council.
