Thursday Island, the 'capital' of the Torres Strait Islands

Japanese Cemetery

The Japanese cemetery where pearl fishermen from Japan who worked and died here from 1878 until 1941 are buried according to their Shinto religion. Thursday Island was an important pearling centre in those days.
