Bolivia State Flag, 1825

Bolivia State Flag, 1825

Bolivia declared its independence from Spain in 1825 and adopted a flag consisting of a band of dark red (in Spanish “punzo”) between two of green; in the centre are five ovals formed by laurels and tree branches and within each of these is a gold star, one for each department: Charcas or Potosí, La Paz, Cochabamba, Santa Cruz and Antofagasta. This is the “Bandera Major”, the State flag, adopted on 17 August 1825.
