Republic of Croatia, 1990

Republic of Croatia, 1990

In 1990 the first multiparty elections took place, and in Croatia, which had already demanded a looser federation, Franjo Tuđman, who even wanted to secede from Yugoslavia, won. A new parliament convened on 30 May, and elected him as President. The star was removed from the flag and replaced by the traditional Croatian checkerboard shield (chequy) with 13 red and 12 white fields on the central stripe; this was first hoisted on 27 July.
