Coat of Arms, Republic of Croatia, 1990

On 21 December 1990, a new Coat of Arms was adopted for the Republic of Croatia. It is a traditional Croatian checkerboard shield (chequy) with 13 red and 12 white fields, with a crown of five small shields representing five different historical regions within Croatia. From left, they are the oldest known symbol representing Croatia; the simplified Coat of Arms of Ragusa (Dubrovnik); Coat of Arms of Dalmatia; Coat of Arms of Istria; Coat of Arms of Slavonia. Most of these differ slightly, in colour and design, from the historically accurate versions.
