Temple of Apollo Hylates

Circular altar, Apollo Hylates

The archaic circular altar at the Sanctuary of Apollo Hylates, composed of rubble set in mud. An enormous quantity of ash and charred bones of sacrificed sheep and goats was in and around this altar. Numerous small terracotta votive offerings were found here, including fragments of bulls with snakes twisting around their legs, a little silver bull and male figurines wearing bull masks. There as an abundance of Crypto-Archaic pottery (600 BCE), but one vessel dating around 2300-2200 BCE indicates the earliest possible use of the site.
