Gazimağusa (Famagusta), a walled city on the east coast

Saint George of the Greeks Church

The Saint George of the Greeks Church, the second largest church of Famagusta, built in Gothic style around 1300. It is said to have been built by a wealthy Greek merchant from the Greek Orthodox quarter in the south-east corner of Famagusta. It used to have vibrant wall frescoes. The church was one of the landmarks of the city, towering above the city walls. During the Ottoman siege of the city in 1570-71, it made a tempting target to the besiegers and was damaged by cannon bombardment.
