Afar and Issa Territory

In 1967 French Somaliland was renamed “Territoire français des Afars et des Issas”, an acknowledgement of the large Afar population and downplaying the significance of the Somali people, who were in favour of downright independence and unification with Somalia (the Issa are a Somali sub-clan). The flag, the French Tricolour, remained the same.
