Church of St. Mary of Zion

The Church of Our Virgin Mary of Zion, the most important church in Ethiopia, originally built during the reign of Ezana, the first Christian emperor, during the 4th century CE; it was rebuilt in 1665 by Emperor Fasilides. Ethiopian Emperors came to be crowned here. Only men may enter, as Mary, symbolised by the Ark of the Covenant allegedly resting in its chapel, is the only woman allowed within its compound.
