Matera, city of caves in Basilicata

Sasso Barisano

Looking up the Sasso Barisano, one of the wards of the ancient city of Matera, consisting of “sassi”, stone houses built in two ravines, that divide this southern Italian city. The 13th century cathedral with its 52 metre tall bell tower overlooks the ravine.
