Piemonte, Italy’s North West

Po river, Turin

The Gran Madre de Dio Church, built between 1818 and 1831 to commemorate the return of Vittorio Emanuele I from exile, as seen from across the Po river in Torino (Turin), the capital of Piemonte (Piedmont), northern Italy. On the hill in the background is the Church of Santa Maria del Monte, begun in 1583 when Duke Carlo Emanuele I decided to begin the works for the construction of a church for the Capuchin friars consecrated to Santa Maria.
