Palermo, the capital city of Sicily

Monk in penance

A monk, in his tunic and his hands bound with ropes he had worn as a penance, placed in his niche with a small child above him. Mummified bodies in various states of preservation are laid out on shelves on either side. Palermo's Capuchin Catacombs contain about 8000 mummies that line the walls.
