Pompeii

Temple of Jupiter

The Temple of Jupiter, at the northern end of Pompeii's forum. It was erected in the mid 2nd century BCE when Roman Jupiter superseded the Greek Apollo as the town's highest god: Jupiter was the ruler of the gods and the protector of Rome. In the earthquake of 63 CE much of the Temple of Jupiter was destroyed. It was still awaiting restoration when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79, burying Pompeii in volcanic dust, pumice stones and ash.
