Pompeii

Fresco of Priapus

A fresco of Priapus weighing his enormous phallus against a bag overflowing with coins in a set of scales was painted in the entrance foyer of the House of the Vettii in Pompeii. He is meant to portray the abundant wealth and good fortune of the the Vettii family and to protect it against jealousy and envy. Priapus, protector of flocks, fruit plants, bees and gardens, is a rustic fertility god, marked by his absurdly oversized, permanent erection.
