Eternal Rome, Italy’s capital

A narrow street in the old Jewish Quarter in the Sant’Angelo region of Rome; this ghetto was ordered by Pope Paul IV in the 16th century, and Jews were confined to this area until well into the 19th century, during the time of the Papal States. Life in the Roman Ghetto was one of crushing poverty, due to the severe restrictions placed upon the occupations that Jews were allowed to perform. Roman Jews were allowed to work only at unskilled jobs.
