Eternal Rome, Italy's capital

Ceiling, San Sebastiano

Ceiling painting in the Basilica of Saint Sebastian outside the walls, or Saint Sebastian at the Catacombs, dedicated to Saint Sebastian, who is said to have been killed around 268 during the Roman emperor Diocletian's persecution of Christians. The emperor commanded him to be tied to a stake and shot full of arrows, as depicted in art. However, he survived this, was rescued and healed by Irene of Rome but when he later harangued the emperor he was clubbed to death.
