Joseon Kingdom, 1893

Joseon Kingdom, 1893

The Korean flag at the Royal Korean Consulate in Hamburg, Germany, had eight “gwae” trigrams, coloured yellow, while the “taegeuk” resembled the present design, albeit rotated. The flag design with eight trigrams was the first proposal in 1882, but was considered too complex and four were dropped. A design with eight “gwae” has existed earlier as a Royal Standard.
