Ssanggyesa Temple, South Gyeongsang Province

Sanshin-gak paintings

Three paintings enshrined in the Sanshin-gak, a Shamanist shrine; at left is Dokseong or “Lonely Saint”, a popular and frequently-worshipped deity; in the centre is the 49 star Chilseong (The Seven Stars), a spirit associated with the Ursa Major (Big Dipper) constellation, seven stars that shine the brightest and are believed to favour the Korean people, protecting them; on the right is Seongmo-halmae Sanshin (Holy-Mother Grandmother Mountain Spirit), the “mother of humanity”, with two attendants and a tiger.
