Basutoland Coat of Arms, 1951

Basutoland Coat of Arms, 1951

Basutoland's first official coat of arms granted in 1951 by the colonial authorities was a green shield displaying a crocodile (Koena - the totem of Moshoeshoe's clan) with above it a sheep flanked by two bushels of grain. Above it is a winged Basotho walking shield with a crown superimposed and an assegai (short stabbing spear) and knobkerrie (wooden battle club) behind it. A scroll underneath shows the motto Khotso ke Nala (Peace is Prosperity).
