Bago, a former capital

Shwemawdaw Paya

The gilded zedi (stupa) of Shwemawdaw Paya. Over 1000 years old, it was originally built by the Mon to enshrine two hairs of the Buddha; it has been enlarged and embellished over the ages. Earthquakes demolished it, but is was always rebuilt.
