Bago, a former capital

Zedi, Shwemawdaw Paya

The gilded zedi (stupa) of Shwemawdaw Paya in the town of Bago (Pegu). Over 1000 years old, it was originally built by the Mon to enshrine two hairs of the Buddha, and was 23 metres high. Many times rebuilt, it now towers to 114 metres.
