Kathmandu Durbar Square, Royal centre of Nepal’s capital

Kala (Black) Bhairab

The figure of Kala (Black) Bhairab, dating from the 6th Century. This is Shiva in his most fearsome aspect, with its six arms, a garland of skulls and trampling a corpse, symbolic of human ignorance. It is north of the Jagannath Temple on Durbar Square.
