Nepal Royal Standard, 2001

The Nepali Royal Standard changed after 1962 when the facial features were removed from the National Flag. The Royal Standard became a square white-bordered crimson flag, featuring, in white, a lion, facing the hoist of the Standard, bearing a white flag. This flag displayed black diagonals and a black circle in the centre. The last Royal Standard, used by King Gyanendra, displayed on the banner of the lion, instead of a circle, a Magen David-type star and a vertical sword. Both are royal symbols, standing respectively for knowledge and strength. In the canton, in white, is a crescent moon, with eight out of sixteen rays, and a white sun with twelve white rays in the upper fly.
