Mughal Empire, 16th century

Mughal Empire, 16th century

The Mughal Empire, founded in 1526 by Babur in present-day Uzbekistan, conquered most of northern India and, at its peak, stretched as far as Peshawar in northeast Pakistan. On contemporary paintings, green triangular flags bearing a golden sun symbol, with a background of very small stars can be seen. This flag may have been the imperial standard, the “Alam”. There is also a similar flag, displaying a lion, partly obscuring the sun, possibly a War Flag.
