British Raj, 1858

In 1858 rule was transferred to the British Crown in the person of Queen Victoria; she was proclaimed Empress of India in 1876. The British Raj (“reign” in Sanskrit), British rule in the Indian subcontinent, lasted until 1947. The flag was the British red ensign with the “Star of India”, a combination of a sun and a star and a garter with the motto “Heaven’s Light Our Guide”.
