Tui A'ana’s Flag 1875-1888

Malietoa was one of the three highest titles in (Western) Samoa; its people had adopted the red and white flag. The other two titles were Tui Atua and Tui A'ana and its chief, Tamasese, favoured the German traders who now visited the country; he placed a black cross on top of the white one, so the flag now featured the German colours in the areas under his influence. In 1887 the Germans forced the issue, declaring Tui A’ana Tupua Tamasese Titimaea as “King of Samoa”.
