On 29 July, director James Mavor was chased by the workers and killed. The following day people were arrested, after angry workers marched to the office. Shots were fired by the Colonial Army at the mutinous workers, resulting in a total number of 24 dead workers. On 30 July, 2006, Suriname vice president Ramdien Sardjoe unveiled this monument.
