Nickerie, Suriname's North-west

Statue of Alida and factory, Wageningen

The statue of the female slave Alida of who, it is claimed, her mistress, the cruel Susanna du Plessis, hacked off her left breast to serve it to her husband as punishment, because he had been ogling her voluptuously. The statue was ercted in 1973 to celebrate 110 years slavery was abolished in Suriname. In the background the factory buildings in Wageningen, the rice centre of Suriname, on the Nickerie river in the Nickerie District, 54 kilometres east of Nieuw Nickerie and 203 kilometres from Paramaribo.
