Paramaribo, Suriname's Capital

Fort Zeelandia, Wilhelmina statue

Fort Zeelandia, a star-shaped 18th-century fort, built by British colonists in 1651 around a small trading post created by the Dutch, in Paramaribo; in the foreground the statue of Queen Wilhelmina, that during Dutch colonial days used to stand on in front of the Government House (presently the Presidential Palace) on the Oranjeplein, now Onafhankelijkheidsplein (Independence Square).
