The Aral Sea

Monument, Mo'ynoq

The entrance to the former sea port of Moynaq (Mo'ynoq), fnow home to only a few thousand residents at most and a fleet of rusting fishing trawlers on the desert floor. Once a bustling fishing community and Uzbekistan's only port city with tens of thousands of residents, Mo‘ynoq is now dozens of kilometres from the rapidly receding shoreline of the Aral Sea. The sign still says “Welcome” in Uzbek and displays a fish.
