Samarkand: the historic centre

Ulugh Beg Madrasah portal

The imposing iwan with its lancet-arch pishtaq or portal facing Registan square, of the Ulugh Beg Madrasah (1417–1420), built by Ulugh Beg during the Timurid Empire era, in his capital city of Samarkand. The mosaic panel over the iwan's entrance arch is decorated by geometrical stylised ornaments.
