Republic of Afghanistan 1973

Republic of Afghanistan 1973

In 17 July 1973, when King Muhammad Zahir Shah was abroad, a coup d'état, directed by the King's brother-in-law and ex-Prime Minister Mohammad Daud Khan took place and the Republic was proclaimed. In a few days the date that appeared on the flag's emblem, the year the present dynasty had acceded to the throne (1348 = 1929) was removed by decree. As a consequence the official flags had to be adjusted correspondingly. A plain flag, without the coat of arms, was also used.
