Aboriginal Marndiwala Initiation Ceremonies in Borroloola

Marndiwala dancers

The dancers, painted with clay and decorated with cotton wool stuck to their bodies, file onto the ceremonial ground at the start of the all-night “Marndiwala” ceremony where the men will perform the dance of the frilled-neck lizard; the following morning the initiates will be circumcised.
