Aboriginal Marndiwala Initiation Ceremonies in Borroloola

Dancing to initiates

Two actors dancing towards the initiates who lie down looked after by their mentors at the start of the all-night Marndiwala ceremony that will culminate in the circumcision of the initiates the following morning. The dancers are painted with clay, decorated with cotton wool stuck to their bodies and wear headdresses made from paper bark.
