Bayamo, where Cuba’s independence movement started

Monument, Plaza de la Patria, Bayamo

The monument to Cuban greats on Plaza de la Patria, featuring Manuel de Céspedes, Antonio Maceo, Máximo Gomez, Perucho Figueredo and, subtly placed left of center, Fidel Castro: it is the only monument he appears on in Cuba. Fidel Castro gave his final, rousing public speech her in July 2006 before being taken ill and stepping down as president.
