Fortress across Havana Harbour

Fortaleza de San Carlos de la Cabaña

The Fortaleza de San Carlos de la Cabaña (Fort of Saint Charles) on the elevated eastern side of the harbour entrance in Havana. Because of the ease with which the British had taken nearby Castillo De Los Tres Reyes Del Morro from the landward site in 1762, La Cabaña was built, between 1763 and 1774. After the Cuban Revolution Che Guevara used it as his headquarters and military prison; many former officials from the Batista regime were executed here.
