Monastery of Agia Napa

The Medieval Monastery of Agia Napa, built in the form of a Medieval Castle around 1500 CE by the Venetians. It was partially built underground to hide an icon of the Virgin Mary from the 7th and 8th centuries and cut into the rock, surrounded by a high wall. It is dedicated to “Our Lady of the Forests”, with the name coming from the Ancient Greek word for wooded valley (“Napa”). It served as both a convent and a monastery during different periods until abandoned in 1758. In 1950 it was restored.
