At Kourion Beach

Chapel of Agios Ermogenis

The chapel dedicated to Agios Ermogenis, a Holy man who was beheaded on the island of Samos, in the 4th century CE because he refused to renounce his faith when Santorinos, the overlord of Samos, commanded him to do. His body was placed in a casket by Christians and thrown into the sea; it washed up on the beach of Episkopi, and a church was built here, 100 metres from Kourion Beach. It was destroyed during the attacks on the island, and a new chapel was built in the 17th century.
