East Timor, 1975

East Timor, 1975

The FRETILIN party (Revolutionary Front for an Independent East Timor) declared independence on 28 November 1975 and adopted a national flag, clearly based on that of FRETILIN. The black triangle represents the four centuries of colonial oppression, the yellow arrowhead the struggle for independence, and red reflects the blood shed by the East Timorese people. The white star symbolises hope for the future.
