FALINTIL, 1998

The first East Timorese National Convention was held in April 1998 in Portugal and representatives of Timorese political parties and organisations decided to adopt the flag of FALINTIL, (Forças Armadas de Libertação Nacional de Timor-Leste), the Liberation Army of East Timor, as a temporary flag of the country; FALINTIL was non-partisan and therefore represented the interests of the people and not the interest of any organisation. The motto under the shield reads “PATRIA POVO” (Fatherland, People).
