Inner dome, Selimiye Camii

Interior of the huge dome (31.25 metre diameter with a spherical profile) of the Selimiye Mosque, an Ottoman imperial mosque, commissioned by Sultan Selim II, and built by architect Mimar Sinan between 1569 and 1575. Its cupola is higher than that of Hagia Sophia, the Byzantine Orthodox Cathedral (now museum) in İstanbul. The mosque was considered by Sinan to be his masterpiece and is one of the highest achievements of Islamic architecture.
